While the world celebrates World Radio Day on 13 February, Dr Bakhtiar Khan, Secretary Information Department Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, convened a strategic meeting in Peshawar with the Chief Executive of The Communicators (Pvt.) Limited Najib Ahmad and his team of media experts to review and deliberate on the ongoing research study of Pukhtunkhwa radio stations and their future direction.

During the meeting, the Secretary highlighted that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa remains one of the provinces where radio listenership is significantly higher compared to other regions of Pakistan. He emphasized the importance of designing region-specific programming that reflects local languages, cultures, and community priorities, ensuring that radio remains closely connected to the people it serves.

The discussion centered on the sustainability of provincial radio stations within a rapidly evolving digital media environment. The Secretary reaffirmed the KP government’s commitment to modernizing its radio network, transforming each station into a digital content creation hub capable of reaching audiences across Pakistan as well as the global Pakistani diaspora.

He further stressed that this transformation must be guided by innovation, digital integration, and the ethical and professional use of Artificial Intelligence in radio — aligned with this year’s World Radio Day theme. At a time when misinformation and fake news are widespread across social media platforms, he underlined the need to strengthen constructive journalism, credible reporting, and responsible broadcasting. The Secretary reaffirmed the KP government’s commitment to modernizing its radio network and informed participants that the government is planning to upgrade studio infrastructure, including transmitters and essential broadcast equipment, to meet contemporary technical standards.

The meeting concluded with a shared understanding that strategic planning, digital expansion, and forward-looking policy reforms are essential to ensure the long-term sustainability, credibility, and broader national and international influence of KP’s radio sector.
